Ankle Plantarflexors or Calf Muscles

The Ankle Plantar-Flexors are located in the posterior leg region of the body. They are commonly called Calf Muscles. Their names are: 1) Gastrocnemius 2) Soleus 3) Plantaris These muscles are shown in figure 1. above. The Ankle Plantar-Flexors main function is to plantarflex the ankle. This occurs during jumping, running and walking. This is illustrated in Figures 2a and 2b.

Two other calf muscles located on the lateral side are the Peroneus Longus and Peroneus Brevis. They provide stability and support to the ankle joint.  See Figure 3.
